Kawabata Makoto – A short guide

Since I started with Fuzzy Sun I slowly tumbled into this neverending hole that is Japanese psych and noise. I made list with a huge load of Japanese bands called ‘The Cosmic Side of Japan’ and I tried to make some sort of guide through the releases of Acid Mothers Temple and its offshoots (wich was really difficult). Kawabata Makoto (speedguru) plays a big role in this whole scene, he is a founding member of Acid Mothers Temple and played in a lot of bands. And since 1978 Kawabata has been releasing albums under different names. You can expect everything on the psychedelic spectrum. In this post I want to highlight a couple of albums, not all of them because it is just too much to grasp.

Kawabata Makoto: That Awaking : Good-bye Me

This is one of the latest studio releases, out since May 2020. Two tracks over half an hour and they are quite exceptionnal. In these Kawabato gives us epic guitarwork over a psychedelic ambient atmosphere.

Nishinihon 西日本: If You Smell What Art Rock is Cookin! アートロックの新鋭

Nishinihon is Tsuyama Atsushi (vocals, electric bass, acoustic guitar),
Ichiraku Yoshimitsu (drums, percussion) and Kawabata Makoto (electric guitar) and this my be my favourite band in this whole post. Nishinihon is wilder and very powerful. Recorded in 1999.

Kawabata Makoto: Mizu Naranu Ao Ni Sae 水ならぬ青にさへ

The original CDR (limited 100) released from Acid Mothers Temple on Jan 1998. This release is filled with guitarnoise but still has an out of this world calming vibe to it.

Kawabata Makoto & The Mothers of Invasion: Hot Rattlesnakes

Mothers of Invasion is Kawabata on guitars, Tsuyama Atsushi on bass and
Ichiraku Yoshimitsu on drums. This spacey stuff was recorded it in London during the Acid Mothers Temple UK tour 2001.

Kawabata Makoto: Your Voice From The Moon

This release is also quite interesting because it let us hear Kawabata on  Electric Comp Synthesizer model-101 and it makes me even more sure he is not from earth.

NANI∞GURU: VOVIVIZM episode 1.5 (Remastered)

The original cassette tape was released by Swap Meat Records for NANI∞GURU’s European tour 2019. NANI∞GURU guitarist Kawabata Makoto and drummer Satoshima Nani from Acid Mothers Temple. This release is uptempo filled with guitar solos and is more easy to listen to.

PIkacyu-Makoto 光宙★魔呼斗: Live & Rare

This is PIKA from Osaka primitive wild girls duo Afrirampo and Makoto Kawabata. This release has two live versions and two special tracks.

PIkacyu-Makoto 光宙★魔呼斗: OM Sweet Home : We Are Shining Stars From Darklside

I like this duo very much, they have made some really great released together and this one is a really good one. Originally released in 2011.

Zoffy: Not “Very Very Famous Songs” vol.1

Formed by Tsuyama Atsushi (Psyche Bugyo, Omoide Hatoba, ex.Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.) and Kawabata Makoto in 1998. Zoffy is well known as playing innovative comical covers of famous songs, but they also play improvised fake trad. & folk music too.

Kawabata Makoto: Yuga Hiku

Yuga Hiku was recorded in 1993 is highly hypnotic filled with weird sounds all made by Kawabata.

AFRIMAKOTO あふりマコト: AFRIMAKOTO

Afrimakoto is Oni and Pika from Afrirampo and Kawabato. This is the latest studio recording session on 14th September 2020. Everything is completely improvised and is a real fun listen!

The new album by Mienakunaru is out. This band is Mike vest (wich playes in a lot of bands like Blown Out, Melting Hand, 11Paranoias,..), Junzo Suzuki (20 Guilders, Astral Travelling Unity, a lot of solo work and a lot of collabs) and Dave Sneddon. Here the 17 minute first track and buy the album to hear the rest.

With Junzo Suzuki in it you may feel like listening to more Japanese psych. I added Mienakunaru to the list too.

Boris release new video for track ‘Zerkalo’ from ‘No’

‘LφVE & EVφL’ was the previous album by The Japanese experimental rockers Boris, that album was filled with doom and epic guitar work. Now they are back with their new album ‘No’. This album is quite different then their latest work. This Boris is the agressive version, the hardcore and trash version, filled with epic solo work and gorgeous riffs, perfect vocals for the music. Yet they stay true to their sound, like at the end of ‘Loveless’ the typical doom sound comes back. This is a band with years of experience and an absolute talent to make heavy music.

‘No’ is an intense and fun listen, with a nostalgic vibe to it. It is awesome from start to finish. Boris is on The Cosmic Side of Japan too.

Now they released the new video ‘Zerkalo’ from that new album and it is the perfect time to revisit the whole album again.

Tune in now.

Crazy japanese garagerock Bogus Killiers

I love this stuff from Japan man, all this stuff is more or less crazy, weird or goddamn loud. I made a really long list with Japanese noise and psych that you can check out here.  Now I came across this label called Kafadan Kontak Records, a diy record label and booking organization firm based in Istanbul and they released the album by Bogus Killers from Shinjuku, Tokyo Japan.

This is a really fun listen, this is nutty Japanese garagerock. Check it out now.

Japanese heaviness Boris are back with new music

‘LφVE & EVφL’ was the previous album by The Japanese experimental rockers Boris, that album was filled with doom and epic guitar work. Now they are back with the first track of their upcoming album ‘No’. This album will be released July 3d. The first track is called ‘Loveless’ and it really is an amazing track, it starts of as thrash metal track with hardcore influences and again the typical guitar work. More at the end of the song the signature sound of Boris comes out, sweeping doom with epic screeching guiter. This track is really good and promising for the whole record. A new track by Japanese-Korean nomadic family Tengger

Tengger‘ is Itta and Marqido and their son Raai, a travelling musical family with roots in Korea and Japan. Their latest album ‘Nomad’ is due for June 12th on Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Their ‘new age drone magic’, as they call it, is as calming as it is uplifting.

Tengger apparently means ‘unlimited expanse of sky’ in Mongolian. The moniker fits the music perfectly. With a harmonium, a battery of analogue synths and sometimes children’s toys they create a perfectly unique, spiritual sound. It’s easy to lose yourself in the waves of their repetitive, hypnotic music. The term ‘spiritual journey’ comes to mind.

‘Nomad’ will be released on June 1 but first we get the third track ‘Water’. Take this soothing music in now.

This Japanese-Korean nomadic family shows you what nature sounds like

This might not be a perfect fit for the average Fuzzy Sun-reader, but we like it a lot. And hey, these are hard times. If you want to re-connect with the world around you and you’re too lazy for yoga, Tengger is the answer. Watch the beautiful video below, and make sure to listen to the track ‘Eurasia’ as well.

Japanese psych rockers Joseph of Kirezi share 2 tracks

The Tokyo psych rockers  Joseph of Kirezi make fuzzed out psych and new they are back with two new tracks that they released in March. The band has some pretty cool tunes released in the past and these new two are self recorded but of really good quality. The first track “Acid Wave” is epic psychedelic rock, raging solos and trippy vibes. The second track “Hirasaka” is 8 minutes long and is something between an epic heavy psych track and mellow cosmic tunes. The bend is together with a whole lot of other Japanese heaviness on my Cosmic List.
